The Only Way Is Essex (otherwise known as TOWIE) is a hit reality TV show set in (you guessed it) Essex.
The show focuses on an ensemble of people who live, work and party in Essex, and shows all of the ups and downs of their lives on camera. While the show is definitely based in reality and the stars are real people, the show does state of the beginning of each episode that the events are slightly dramatised for the viewer’s entertainment.
Being as popular as it is, TOWIE has created plenty of household names over the years, so we’ve decided to take a look back at some of our favourites and see what they’ve been up to over the years.
Probably one of the most iconic members of the TOWIE cast, Joey Essex became infamous due to his conceived stupidity and coining of the phrase, “reem”.
Joey’s image has always made him a standout in the British showbiz industry, and he even released his own single “Reem” back in 2011. He left the show back in 2013 to focus on his relationship with then partner Sam Faiers, and has gone on to many other reality shows.
He has appeared in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, as well as starring in his own series Educating Joey Essex, The Jump and most recently, Celebs Go Dating.
Joey Essex is a symbol of Essex and has left a huge impression on the British public, with no signs of slowing down.
Arg was an original cast member back when it was on ITV2, and has seen quite the evolution since his introduction.
He has always been a fan favourite on the show due to his on/off relationship with flame Lydia Rose Bright, and famous partnership with Gemma Collins. After his break-up with Lydia, Arg took some tiff off from the show and pursued other roles on shows such as Celebs Go Dating, Celebrity Super Spa and more.
Thankfully this has kept Arg on our screens, and he’s now returned as a permanent cast member on TOWIE.
Probably one of the most famous original TOWIE stars, Amy has done quite a bit with her career.
Amy was actually the first cast member to leave the show, and has taken on a fair amount of projects since. She has launched many different businesses in the fashion and beauty fields, which have all achieved success.
Amy also starred in other reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother, and is now settling down after welcoming her first child, Polly last year.
Lydia was also a big fan favourite during her time on TOWIE, being mostly known for her on/off relationship with the previously mentioned Arg.
The relationship between Arg and Lydia keep viewers on the edge of their seats until they eventually broke up on the show, breaking the hearts of many fans in the process. Since then, Lydia has gone on to open up her own fashion boutique in Essex called Bella Sorrella, which has been booming ever since.
She also has her own fashion blog to coincide with this, and has become quite the fashion expert in Essex.
Sam appeared on TOWIE back in 2010, and had her fair share of exciting and interesting storylines throughout the show.
After the show, Sam managed to stay in the public consciousness after appearing on Celebrity Big Brother and became a fashion and beauty icon. More recently, Sam landed her own reality TV show called “The Mummy Diaries”, which focused on her life with her boyfriend Paul Knightley and their child.
The pair have also recently just welcomed their second child, and we will never get tired of seeing her on our screens.
Mark was one of the main heartthrobs on TOWIE, being a favourite among many female audience members.
Having been in relationships with multiple different members of the cast, he managed to get himself into some very engaging storylines throughout his time. Since leaving TOWIE, Mark has settled down and married Coronation Street star, Michelle Keegan.
He has also become a presenter on many different platforms, with his own radio show on Heart FM and presenting Take Me Out: The Gossip alongside co-host Laura Jackson. He’s also managed to make some waves in the USA with Mario Lopez on the show Extra.
It’s clear to see that The Only Way Is Essex has produced a fair amount of stars throughout the years, and will continue to do so for as long as the show runs.
TOWIE has the ability to draw in a huge audience to watch these Essex hopefuls in their day to day lives, and continues to be one of the biggest reality TV shows in the UK.
