We caught up with Annette Dyer, the manager of the Phoenix Resource Centre, to get the lowdown on life in The Harvey Centre.
We are an environmental charity which has been operating since September 2009. Our goal is to practise and promote the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing the items that would have ended up going to landfill. We collect clean usable waste including wood, card and unwanted goods which are available for members to take and re-use!
We are always very busy! As well as completing the bog-standard tasks like serving customers and displaying stock, we work closely with our sister store ‘In The Making’ which sells a range of products crafted by students with additional needs.
Community is a very important thing for us. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is providing an open ear to lonely residents in the local area. We also love turning waste things into play things!
One of my favourite days was The Harvey Centre’s celebration for the Queen’s 90th Birthday. It was a day packed with fun, positivity and members of the local community! We thoroughly enjoyed crafting all of the bunting around the centre and running our ‘create-a-crown’ workshop!
I’m a Harlow local, through-and-through! I love The Harvey Centre because everyone is so friendly, from the managers to the shop staff. Everyone is willing to help if you ever have a problem which is lovely to see in such a large centre.
I absolutely loved creating the stags for last years’ Christmas exhibit. However, a piece I hold very close to my heart is our “Under the Sea” project. This was an exhibit where we crafted sea creatures out of recycled plastic to raise awareness of the damage plastic can bring to our oceans.
It would be our in-store slogan – “recycle, reuse, reduce”!
We’ve got lots of lovely offers coming up for our customers. You can revamp your garden with our offers ‘10 bags of seeds for £1’ or ‘5 large bags for £1’. We have even got fancy dress outfits available for just £5 each! We would recommend keeping an eye on Phoenix Live’s page and our website for the latest events.
